All three Poetry Show hosts;

Dennis Morton,
Lesley-Ann Taylor and
Susan Freeman, joined by
Len Anderson from Poetry Santa Cruz,

were in-studio on October 9 to share some favorite poems and support KUSP’s Fall Pledge Drive.

Poets chosen include David Mohan, Jane Hirshfield, William Stafford, Ruth Stone and Kate Gale.

Four members of the local Emerald Street Writing Group join host Dennis Morton, on the October 2 Poetry Show, for an in-studio discussion of their perspectives on writing poetry and their experiences as members of a writing group. Members Phyllis Mayfield, Len Anderson, Maggie Paul and Virgil Banks describe the workings of their group and read some of their own work. The group published an anthology in 2006, entitled Harvest From the Emerald Orchard.

Guest poet Zara Raab discusses and reads from her book Swimming the Eel with host Dennis Morton, on KUSP’s Poetry Show for September 6, 2011.

Billy Gawain

We’d been traipsing the long afternoon
through the bramble, when we came upon
him hanging from the oak, his black boots
almost scraping on the ground, bowing
down a branch half-cleft from the oak’s crown.
His hands seemed to take back what he’d done,
they at least had wanted life, clawing,
frantic to unknot the fraying jute,
his thick, blackened nails cut and bloodied.
Now the arms hung loosely at his side.

His trousers were stained dark in the crotch,
the eyes in his ancient face held watch
on the air where the black crows circled.
I’d never seen a body before,
cut down and laid out in the stinkweed.
He had no kin, so he was buried
with our own, the only name he bore
the name we gave him and had chiseled
on his headstone at the spring solstice:
“Billy Gawain, A Stranger to Us.”

Guest poets Maria Teutsch, Jerry Quickley, Eleni Sikelianos, and Francesco Levato join host Dennis Morton on the August 28 Poetry Show to read poetry and discuss their participation in the Days and Nights Festival at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. The four poets will join in original collaborations with Philip Glass and the YOA: Orchestra of the Americas for An Evening of Poetry on Wednesday, August 30. Composer Philip Glass is the Producing Artistic Director of the Festival.

Failing and Flying

Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.
It's the same when love comes to an end,
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was 
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly.
Like being there by that summer ocean
on the other side of the island while
love was fading out of her, the stars 
burning so extravagantly those nights that
anyone could tell you they would never last.
Every morning she was asleep in my bed
like a visitation, the gentleness in her
like antelope standing in the dawn mist.
Each afternoon I watched her coming back
through the hot stony field after swimming,
the sea light behind her and the huge sky
on the other side of that. Listened to her
while we ate lunch. How can they say 
the marriage failed? Like the people who
came back from Provence (when it was Provence)
and said it was pretty but the food was greasy.
I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell,
but just coming to the end of his triumph.
